His father, Ranald, was a physician who won a gold in coxless pairs at the '48 Olympics.

Hugh Laurie himself was a notable oarsman. He rowed for Cambridge University in the 1980 Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race (an event which is not as amateur as it might sound. The crews are invariably comprised of top rowers, often foreign internationals, who just 'happen' to be at the Universities Wink)
