First he belonged to Japan. Then he belonged to Seattle. Now he belongs to history.
Ichiro Suzuki achieved baseball immortality last night, eclipsing the 84-year-old record for hits in a season with hits in his first two at-bats at Safeco Field. The record is the most important historic achievement ever by a Seattle Mariner, mesmerizing the region and easing the bitterness of a dismal season.
The sellout crowd went wild after the record-breaking hit, fireworks exploded and the theme from "The Natural" bellowed. The game was halted for several minutes as the Mariners dugout emptied, players smothering a grinning Ichiro with hugs. He trotted about 50 feet to the front-row seats where five members of Sisler's family, including his 81-year-old daughter, Frances Sisler Drochelman, were standing and applauding. -

In Suzuki's first 6 years in MLB, he has averaged 225 hits per year, with a career BA of .331. It should be noted that he was 27 in his rookie MLB year. He had played several years in the Japanese majors.
