Artificial turf for soccer pitches. In 1981 QPR (Queen's Park Rangers ) were first to install artificial turf. Preston North End (1986), Oldham Athletic (1986) and Luton Town (1985) followed. They stood alone. The surface was disliked by players and managers alike because, inter alia, it caused injury to players and had a bounce which was unlike that of turf. The Football Association banned the use of anything but natural turf in 1988. The last club to remove their pitch seems to have been Luton, who removed theirs before the start of the 1990-91 season.

Ah, the dear 'Turnip' Taylor. He gave us a catch-phrase : " Do I not like that !". That was always a despairing understatement, if ever there was one, uttered when his defence had just gifted yet another goal to the opposition who were, as often as not, almost as hopeless as usBig Grin . And to think our last national manager was a Swede, Mr Eriksson ! What is it about root vegetables and English soccer? The present man is McLaren. What's the betting that there's a potato called a McLaren? (There's a 1982 scientific paper on leaf, light and potato production by J S McLaren. Perhaps he's a relation? )

Dunfermline ought to have kept their pitch, just to give them an unfair advantage: aren't they at the bottom of the Scottish Premier League at the moment? Big Grin Roll Eyes
