You are working in a store and are given counterfeit money in exchange for merchandise.

What is your legal obligation?

The other day, while shopping, I paid with a five dollar bill, the couterfeit pen was used to verify the bill was authentic. I asked 'what would you do if this bill was counterfeit?' The reply was 'I do nothing except return the bill to the customer, this is company policy'.

Your legal obligation is to follow the store's policy. In some cases, I think the policy is to call the manager to the register, and let the manager handle it. If it was me, I would follow store policy.

You're not legally obligated to do anything. You have a responsibility to your employer to follow company policy, but you're not obligated unless you want to keep your job. Wink

If you receive a counterfeit, chances are the person who gave it to you is unaware, especially with smaller bills. They have not necessarily broken the law if they received it in change somewhere. It then falls to them to remember where they got it and follow up.
