Will a life insurance policy be paid out if the person had committed suicide?

I've heard 2 different versions, and without actually calling an insurance company and alarming them with my question, I wondered if anyone here knew.

No, it won't Tree. At least there's a clause in my policy, stating that suicide is not covered. That was also in my brother's policy. Some insurances could be different though, so I can't speak for them all.

Thanks for replying honi.

Some woman told me that there is a stipulation regarding not comitting suicide within a year or two after getting the policy because they figure if you're going to comit it, you will before that time frame.

Hmmm - I wonder....

Most life insurance policies provide that if the insured commits suicide within a specified period, usually two years, after the issue date, the company's liability will be limited to a return of premiums paid.

suicide clause

The sites I checked (about 5 of them) have told me the same thing. If you commit suicide in the first 2 years of the policy, they just refund your premiums paid. After 2 years, you are covered. My policy is this way. Some are not. I would call anonymously or look on their website for their policy. I hope nobody is planning on committing suicide! Frown

No one is contemplating it, but someone HAS committed it - (someone we know - not family)and some of us were wondering how it all worked!

Thanks for your info!
