You're correct!

Buck learned to be a lead sled dog, while fighting his enemy, the Spitz, in Jack London's 1903 novel. Buck later befriended John Thornton, a man seeking gold in Alaska, but when Thornton was killed by Indians, Buck left the human world behind and joined a wolf pack.
