The world record for pumpkins goes to one grown by Geneva Emmons of Sammamish, Washington at 1262 pounds, weighed in at Canby, Oregon on October 6, 2001.
As far as the state with the most record pumpkins that would be Washington that just edges out Oregon and New York for the honor according to this site.

WARREN, R.I. --Despite this year's heavy rains in the region that stunted pumpkin growth, a Rhode Island farmer has set what could be a new record for the largest pumpkin in the world.
Forty-year-old Ron Wallace's pumpkin weighed 1,502 pounds at Saturday's weigh-off competition at Frefichs Farm. Rhode Island's Department of Environmental Management officials say a world record of 1,469 pounds was earned last year by Larry Checkon of Pennsylvania. - Boston.com
