Charles Ellett designed the bridge.

The initial link between the Canadian and American sides was established by a you man named Homan Walsh, who won a contest to fly a kite from one side to the other. The kite string was fastened to a tree on the American side, and cords of increasingly larger sizes were attached on the Canadian side and pulled across, culminating with a wire cable that marked the beginning of the bridge.
