Sirocco (siroc) is a strong southerly to southeasterly wind in the Mediterranean that originates from the Sahara and similar North African regions. It is known in Libya as gibli /qibla. Both sirocco and ghibli are Italian words. Compare siracco to the Greek sirokus (wind). Greece conquered the Libyan area over 2000 years ago. (Tripoli comes from Tripolios, three cities.) Part of Libya was a colony of Italy for most of the first half of the 20th C. This explains the Italian/Greek loan words.

Is it fohn (also spelled fon or foehn)? I know the word from Scrabble, and it occasionally shows up in the NY Times crossword puzzle.

Oh, wait, did DG already answer correctly?

Yes, with Gibli (or Ghibli) he is right. Since I had totally forgotten this relic I will go ahead and answer. It is Ghibli.

Maserati Ghibli (Wikipedia)

My original definition came from a library book. Here is an online definition, which makes both föehn & sirocco partially right, but Ghibli the fully correct answer :

Sirocco in Libya
Libya also has its famous desert storms. A southerly, dry and hot wind comparable with the Sirocco. The Libyans call it: Ghibli.
This wind brings dust and sand; the sky is red to brown and the visibility can lower to less than 30 meters.
Libya has no natural barriers, so this wind can spread through the whole country. When Ghibli reaches the Mediterranean the temperature there can suddenly rise from 40 to 50°C and the humidity lower from 80 to 10 %.
The Ghibli can last one to four days. During this period normal life is hardly possible.
Fortunately this desert storm can be well predicted; it always occurs when there's a deep low above the Med.

My apologies for losing the original copied text. Thanks for the answers ! Big Grin
