142,600 tons, according to the US Geological Survey

"Of an estimated 142,600 tons of all gold ever mined, about 15% is thought to have been lost, used in dissipative industrial uses, or otherwise unrecoverable or unaccounted for. Of the remaining 121,000 tons, an estimated 33,000
tons are official stocks held by central banks and about 88,000 tons are privately held as coin, bullion, and jewelry."

This information is dated January, 2003 so the total may be a bit higher now.

Just for fun, I wanted to know how much space the 33,000 tons on reserve at central banks would occupy. If my calculations are correct, it is approximately 55,000 cubic feet.

You know those nice, big homes around 6,000 square feet that some of the big whigs live in with 9' ceilings? That's about what is needed for the world's central bank gold reserves.

Yes coldfuse according to " National Geographic" the total is only 161,000 tons in all history, barely enough to fill two Olympic-size swimming pools. More than half has been extracted in the past 50 years. Thanx. Smile
