I just read this article in the news paper about how they’re making cars more sleeker. They described it as a hip-hop style. First of all I have no idea what this means since they look nothing at all like something that resembles hip-hop. They said we are in the hip-hop generation. I don’t really think hip-hop is popular enough to make it the name of an entire generation. Do people think young people will buy cars if they are geared toward them? And do you think people actually buy stuff just because there’s a pretty person in the ad? Do you think people buy things mostly because of what it's known as or for what it does for them.

The terms "Hip Hop" and "Rap" music are often used interchangeably, although they are not the same, and at my age, I don't dare to describe the difference. While different parts of the country (USA) have different tastes in music, overall, nationwide, Rap has emerged as the most popular amongst the teen and young adult set, and it has been for a number of years, far surpassing Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Punk, etc. Originally a music of the Black race, it has spread, like Rock and Roll, to encompass many cultures and races. Eminem is one of the top rappers right now, so whatever style car he owns, that's what young America wants, and that's what the marketers who target this generation will give them. While the more mature adults will choose a car based on a lot of research, the younger ones will go with 'what's cool'. And you can bet that an ad with a sexy model leaning against the car DOES make a difference.

I've never bought a car for the image. When I buy a car I look for price and performance. The idea of a hip-hop car doesn't appeal to me. They would be marketing a generation that doesn't usually buy bran new cars because they're still establishing credit. It doesn't make sense to me. Usually when you get into your mid twenties you start to grow out of rap. They're targeting a small percentage of eligible buyers. It'll fail for sure.

I think people will buy what they like, and not what's in an ad. I don't care what ad I see, I'll still drive a Cadillac. Big Grin Maybe the hip hop car will bounce instead of running smooth. Big Grin

I read somewhere that country music was the most popular music in the country (I remember it distinctly and it was from a credible source). To me, rock seems just as popular. I guess rap is just more mainstream and so they put it on the radio more. You are right that rap and hip-hop are interchangable. They aren't really the same though, rap is apart of hip-hop.

PersonallyI detest ads that have rap in them. Does nothing positive for product image.

I also don't like the constant 1/2 second shots flipping to a new image or view. I end up not really seeing anything, not coherent anyhow. If I am asking "what the heck was that?" at the end of the ad it is surely not effective.

I absolutely think that people base their opinions on ads. A while ago Pepsi had some old people in their ads. Their sales declined. When Pepsi did a study, young people said, "I don't wanna drink Pepsi, that is for old people." Pepsi changed their ad and added some commercials with young people. (thus we became Pepsi.. the new generation) There are marketing companies that survey people to find out what they like. Commercials are geared toward this. And you ask if someone buys something because a pretty girl is there?.. Hell yes they do. Sex sells. It always has. They put the best looking people in ads. Excuse me Jusork... are those Bugle Boy Jeans your wearing? Wink Better go buy a pair cause you'll get the hot chick. You wanna attract someone.. buy some COOOOL ice gum. I'm not saying EVERYONE is effected by ads but a LOT are. (it is never everyone)

I think young people will buy a hip-hop car. They have probably researched thousand of people and showed that ad to thousands of people before it ran. Have you ever been part of a market research study before? They show the ads to people of a certain age group. That is their target market. They ask key questions on how they like the ad. How likely they would be to buy the car. There is sometimes up to 50 questions. You can be sure they didn't just run that car ad without being sure that it would sell cars. Sex and Music sell. That is how the world works. People want to be hip hop cool and get the pretty girl. Marketing companies are smart. They have done their homework.

P.S. I think that a lot of people are smarter than the car companies ... but those aren't the ones they are targeting. Pontiac really got the young market with their Grandam ads. Its just business. Smile

I could never see anyone saying at a market research study that they'd be more likely to buy something because it could get me a girl. I could see someone saying they'd be more likely to go with the one with women when asked to pick which one is more fun and makes the car look better. I just don't think people are that influenced by things like that.

I have on occasion bought product I otherwise wouldn't have. That Wet Shine lipstick was one of them. The commercial lipstick on looks a whole lot different than when my daughter and I use it!

I have refused to buy products because of the ads also. I'm very unimpressed with one of those tampon commercials where the woman is tying a string of tampons together out the window. Gross! They show this on prime time TV. Then males in the room start asking what's the difference in a tampon? It seriously makes them think there has to be some big deal and the honestly want an answer to this.

I will start buying Herbal Essence again when they show me what it does to a man in the shower. Show me a totally organic experience for guys. The have been know to use whatever shampoo is in the bathroom when taking a shower. They like clean hair too.

My brother cracks me up watching TV. He goes into his commercial interpretation. There was an ad for a luxury car with a beautiful woman in an evening gown. He starts carrying on that if you buy that car, it comes with a penis extention.

Of course sex sells. It hits on part of our nature. Have you ever watched a commercial that made you hungry? I have. There were these great camera shots advertising Buskin Bakery, I think. If that didn't give you a sugar craving, I don't know what will. We all eat and like certain foods.
