I see people wearing sweatpants with one pant leg down and the other one up to their knee. I have even seen some adults doing this.
Why do they do this? Does it mean something? '***************************************** 10-08-04, 07:45 AM Lydia I asked that question several years back to a my teenaged niece - she told me that it indicates which gang they are in. The weird thing is, depending on the area you're in, you see kids as young as 7 or 8 doing this - maybe they're just trying to look cool at that point.
10-08-04, 05:23 PM jusork I would stray from thinking it's involved with "coolness" or gangs. It's clearly not limited based on sex or age. I'd just refer to it more as an urban thing. That's the type of people I normally see it with.
10-09-04, 04:13 PM honilov Lydia, there are kids as young as 7 or 8 that's in gangs. It's found a lot in big cities where their parents are gang members, too. Sad, but true.
This 'is' the style of some gangs, so if someone sees their kid doing it, it might be wise to question them. Every kid that does it is not in a gang though.
10-09-04, 06:24 PM MommyTimesTwo I did a search online, and every time something relating to this came up, it was websites for schools banning wearing pants like this under the title "gang insignias". So it definitely is in some places, to some people.
10-09-04, 11:21 PM gerry Ever see a kid with a 32 waist wearing size 42 jeans half way down his Hilfiger boxers? Watch out for him, he could be a Blood or a Krypt! Same if he's showing some leg, probably has one of them gang insignias tattoed under his ankle sox! And I'm sure those girls showing off their pierced belly-buttons are hanging with these same thugs! Gee, talk about a generation gap, why can't we just let these kids be who they are and enjoy their youth while they still have it?

Because sometimes they really are in a gang. Gangs are a reality, even in small towns. My hometown of Glens Falls NY, nicknamed "Hometown USA", is now having trouble with gang shoot-outs and drugs on street corners.
Individuality is one thing, gang violence is another.
10-09-04, 11:53 PM gerry Yes, true, but 99.99% of them are not. Let's not judge a kid based on what he or she is wearing. Chances are, he or she is one of your own. No one condones gang violence, and most(including me) would not condone such attire in school. But in the mall, or on the streets, come on, listen to words of wisdom and let it be, let it be.
10-10-04, 08:06 AM clarebear Ok before this thread gets out of control let me clare-ify it a little more.I'm not talking about a kid. My mom's neighbor (I'm guessing she is about 30 years old) wears her pants like this. I'm actually too embarrassed to ask her so I thought I would ask here. I have seen kids wear their pants like this also. My mom lives in a very good area and her neighbor is NOT in a gang. Her neighbor works for the big 3. I just saw her last weekend and she was wearing her pants like this. I was just wondering if it meant something or not. (I posted in teens cause I thought someone who is a teen or has a teen would know) It is common amongst teens but I see people of all ages doing this.
10-10-04, 05:24 PM jusork Whew, I was worried there for a second, Gerry. Nice reply.
10-10-04, 06:07 PM MommyTimesTwo I was thinkin'...
When I was in elementary school and junior high, it was just SOOOO cool for the guys to shave lines into thier eyebrows. Like, vertical lines. Supposedly, a certain number over each eye meant something, but I sincerely doubt any of them knew what it meant.
Anyway, my father is a corrections officer. A few years before this fad started in the general public, it was a gang insignia in prisons and inner cities. My school ended up banning it for that reason.
So I suspect that the leg-rolled-up thing probably began as a gang thing, and may still be in many places, but that it's "mainstreamed" to just be "cool".
10-14-04, 12:30 PM clarebear Well I got my answer! I stopped by my mom's yesterday and the neighbor was outside. I asked her why she wears her sweatpants with one leg up. she said, "I don't know, I just think its cool."
Sometimes there is just no method to the madness. LOL Wink
10-14-04, 01:08 PM MommyTimesTwo ROFLMAO!!!
10-16-04, 05:17 AM SeattleRon it' was an LL Cool J thing. It's has nothing to do with gangs. I hope that answered your question. LL Cool J started the fad,, strictly to sell some records.... so don't worry about your kids trying that crap. It's ok. i got 2 thousand messages under my belt, just gnore the rest of that junk
10-16-04, 05:28 AM SeattleRon the sweatpant thing was just to stupid gay. a real gangster or a problem child never really gave a damn about how he or she was dressed up, except for the colors he or she wore. thats about it.
