Salam. For a change my discussion is for atheists & agnostics (mainly) & not for christains. We muslims believe in Allah (God). His prophets, His angels, satan, hell & heaven. Christain believe the same.
I have heard quite a few stories about possessions.... someones being possessed by a demon (or a jinn). Again i have heard it not seen it. Some people ho i have met claim they have seen it with their own eyes.
Now ideally it should be believe in prophets leading to the belief in One God or believe in GOD leading to believe in His prophets ____ and then all this leading to the belief in the devil, hell & heaven etc etc.
Question ... if one is an actual witness to possession of a soul/body by a demon/jinn (which I am not)... would that be evidence... that there is something supernatural & the possibilty 'YES THERE IS A GOD'?.
Offcourse if a person behaves like you see in some movies... one can/may come to a logical conclusion & put aside that there is something super natural. Assumme that the person possessed, that you are seeing with your own eyes... is so powerful that you need 7 to 8 men to get hold of him/her. One push from that possessed person to you, is like you picking up a pillow and throwing it away. Further the possessed person behave crazily when the bible or Quran is recited.
Peace. **************************************************************** 10-01-05, 11:09 PM jusork I wouldn't suddenly start considering there's something supernatural involved if some person has the ability to fight off a load of strong people, but I might start wondering about weird possibilites. Seeming as if he were unnaturally repulsed by the Bible wouldn't affect my consideration though.
Is having superhuman strength really a feature of possession?
10-02-05, 02:38 AM tsaeb Just as some folks go out of control mentally when, for example, God is talking to them, some other folks go out of control physically when, for example, they are not talking to God.
Please bare with my response for what it is: a bad joke. I bet that I had you going. Yet, we really do not know what causes extreme behaviors. Some of us fear God so as not to go off the deep end.

That would be one possibility.
Another possibility would be that there are many gods.
Another possibility would be that this is a psychologically distressed individual. There are many cases of people under great distress having seemingly superhuman strength. That's why, in the old days, mentally ill people were put in straight-jackets. One person with enough determination and enough distress can be extremely strong. Think of the behavior of people in life-threatening situations or people under the influence certain kids of drugs, such as PCP.
By the way, Bik, just out of curiosity, why did you say that you're not a demon/jinn? I doubt anyone suspects you're such a thing! Is it part of Muslim culture to say that you're not a jinn if the word comes up, or is that just something you thought we might suspect? I'm not a demon or jinn either, just in case anyone is wondering! Smile

No. Evidence of the supernatural is not necessarily evidence of a higher power or deity.

No no Sarai. What I mean is that I am not a witness of actual possession/exercism (thats the name of that old movi right). People have come & told me that they saw such stuff with their own eyes (possession and black magic)..... I have not seen it. Peace
10-02-05, 02:40 PM Sarai Okay, Bik. That makes sense! Smile

possession/exercism (thats the name of that old movi right).
That would be The Exorcist.
The Exercist would make a nice parody movie though...an old former aerobic instructor has to battle the terrible evils of The Devil through strenuous excercising. How exciting!
10-02-05, 07:45 PM frankvan I have seen David Copperfield fly above the Grand Canyon, and out of the door of a theater he was appearing at. Does that mean he is, or was, possessed ? Not in my books. Wink
10-02-05, 09:28 PM jusork Frank, were you actually at the Grand Canyon when he flew over, or was it a TV special?
10-02-05, 10:16 PM aminator2002 Seeing someone possessed... would be hard for me to know what a possession is without the Hollywood definition of possession. By the fact that something which no one credible has ever seen is such a spectacle for movie producers makes me believe that so-called possessions are just made up nonsense. It would take my own mom's head spinning around to make me believe in such things much less to have it affect my religious beliefs.

A TV Special. That's where I saw all of the miracles and possessions I've seen so far. Wink
