Could someone be kind enough to tell me of a site or other resource where I will find a picture of the underwing of the male Argema Mittrei or comet Moth and the female Luna moth, actias luna. This is for a man I know, a deaf mute artist with asbergers who creates the most beautiful work. He has two pieces nearly finished but he does not have the underwing details he insists upon. I will post some photos of his stuff if you would like.

I think to be in proper keeping with site rules I should have provided the web site: http://www.natureslorephotography.com/More.htm

I found it by searching http://images.google.com for luna moth. I didn't see any underwing pictures searching for Argema mittrei or comet moth, but perhaps I just didn't spot them - it may be worth your time to take another look. There are also image searches at http://yahoo.com and http://ditto.com (and, I'm sure, other places as well), that I didn't try, so you may wish to try them as well.

I feel a bit of a fool, I have searched extensively for a lot of underwing photos for my friend on google images, and have found many. These were from my list of undiscoverables. If you could find one of the male Comet Moth on one of those sites I would be very happy and surprised. I will look again.

Here are a couple of more links to photos I found on Google ("underwing moths images"), if your friend doesn't mind considering alternate species Smile : http://www.origins.tv/MothPhotographersGroup/Files/Live/Living46.htm and http://www.cirrusimage.com/moths_sweetheart_underwing.htm.

I used to collect insects. My underwings had such brilliant colors under those drab upper wings, but -- alas -- the pigments in the wings of the pinned specimens fade after a few decades.

OK, this site shows images (too big to reproduce here, I think) of both male and female A. mittrei, whose common name is given as "Madagaskan Moon Moth." It identifies the image I posted previously as a male, not a female. Serious gender identity issues going on here... Smile

That is a great effort again. I love that the bottom side is so similar that they don't bother with an underwing shot! After all this time! That site has loads of other underwing shots on it great!
