Well, an 18th century Italian is given credit for inventing artificial insemination and reportedly was the first to successfully use it on a domestic animal - a dog.

Artificial Insemination was first performed on cattle in the US in 1937 and since then has been used on swine, rabbits, horses, sheep, and other types of livestock.
