Yesterday, here in NC, I saw a snake which I am trying to identify. It was about 12" long, solid black except it had a yellow band across the head.

I've googled several times and have been unable to identify. Most of the searches have led me to pictures of a coral snake, but this snake had no other markings except the yellow band.

If it is, then it is a yellow ring neck. Ring necks are nocturnal and it is a rare treat to see one during the day. They prefer damp areas hiding under loose rocks or dead trees. They grow up to 15 inches in length. Feeding primarily on small salamanders, lizards, and frogs, as well as earthworms and juvenile snakes of other species. They use partial constriction when subduing prey

Although they fall into the category of being venomous, they pose no threat to humans and can be safely handled and are commonly seen in the pet trade. It is rare for them to bite, and if picked up they secrete from the corners of the mouth foul smelling saliva. Lifespan in cavity is roughly 6 years and over 10 years in the wild.

I don't know if it is common but my daughter came running into our living room saying she found something black in the house and we found one of these snakes in our kitchen about 6 inches long or so. We live in central Indiana and I have never seen one until today.

Oddly, enough I saw one of these snakes today. It was dead- very tiny, narrow body and about five inches in length. First one I've ever seen and came to Google to see what it was. I'm in southern West Virginia.

I thought that it was a dried up worm in my basement Family room but it slithered.....I went up stairs and googled black snake+yellow neck band and linked to this site! Big Question is? Does anything that there may be more inside my house. He is about 4-5 inches long, I wonder if there is a nest somewhere. There is a storage space under the steps but I am not aware of any access to the outside. My son wants to keep him, what are your thoughts and what would you feed him? Thank you, Tracey

Yes, you did. (Better than I did, it seems.) You can also use the URL function at the top of the box you type your post in. It's self-explanatory.

Unless your finger was really close to the lens and several feet away from the snake (always a wise move), that is one small snake.

By the way, welcome to AnswerPool. I hope you enjoy the site and it proves useful to you. Feel free to look around and click on things. You won't break anything. (If I haven't broken anything, it is unlikely anyone will.) There are a couple of word games in the Members' Open Forum. You may enjoy getting into one of those. If you have any recipes to share, please do so. If you don't know where to put something, just write me (my screen name @ gmail.com) and I'll help. If you have layout/operation questions about the site, check the Information Desk in the Member Information Center.

Thank you so much!!! I am so grateful for this site it is great!
My finger was about 2 inches from the little guy, definitely closer to the camera than the snake. In the position he is in it's about the size of a 50 cent piece!!! At the largest approximate 2 inch round area. I hope I am making sense! I am so happy he is around. Beautiful!!

I was in the garage tonight, :I had a dream a week ago about a snake in my garage: turned around and there he was a brown snake with a yellow ring arounds his head... looing at me like " whats up player? " did a google search after letting him skirm into the garage broom and wakin up my girl to show her what I found. I have never seen a snake like this, seen cottonmouths, copperheads, coral snakes even rattlers in the carolinas mountains , but not this guy. then i saw this post. thought I would give a shoutout to the snake peeps out there, about 12" long yellow band behind head brown body seems pretty docile.... the most scary part is as I was cleaing some pcs of spyware and then I heard this song.., Charlie Daniels Band - The Legend Of Wooley Swamp came on, dont know it?? download it... kinda spookey.... Kills the other little critters so hes cool with me hes goingfree in the evil neighbors backyard....:-)

I just found this little guy when I rolled my trash can out of the garage. I'm in the NC mountains.

I then googled "black snake yellow ring" and found this forum. Thanks for all the info.
