Does anyone here have or know someone who has OCD? How does it manifest in them? When did they find out, and what precipitated them seeking help? How are they treated?

Thanks.

Both of my sons have OCD... it is mixed up in their Autism and ADHD diagnoses. We use redirection and positive reinforcement to manage their behaviors.

Adults can use medications such as Prozac to manage OCD at times.

Other treatments and information about OCD .

Do you know where I can find info on treatments without the meds? I'm allergic to Prozac and Buspar, so they said there isn't anything I can take.

We're working on the behaviour response therapy now, but that doesn't stop the thoughts that don't have behaviours associated with them, if you know what I mean.

TY!

Momx2,

I presume you are under the care of a physician. Are you also have some pschiatric evals done? Sometimes specialists can provide additional information or therapies and coordinate with your other caregivers.

Part of management of OCD is interrupting the "inappropriate" thoughts, even if there is no behavior associated with them. You develop a planned and specific protocol each and every time you have that thought. Positive reinforcement each time you successfully divert yourself and a negative response each time you are unsuccessful can work toward managing thoughts and behavior.

I just started seeing the doctor about this, and I am seeing a psychiatrist too. I was first diagnosed with it when I was 12, and again at 19, but I was in denial. I'm at the point now where if I let it keep going I'm not going to be able to handle it anymore. It's seriously disrupting my life and my family's.

I will definately ask him about that--I've had one appt with him and have another Monday. I really don't want to take the meds, even if there happens to be one I could take. I'd rather just do it myself (otherwise I'm afraid if the day comes I want to stop the meds, I'll have problems again).

Thank you SO MUCH for your help. I am so glad I was able to find someone so knowledgable and kind. If they had a rose emoticon I'd give it to you, but since they don't: @->-

It is my pleasure to help, that is what this site is about after all, information and help. Smile

I don't know if I gave you any information that does you any good, but I hope I might have helped you a little bit any way! Big Grin

I'll tell you, the thing that made me feel best was seeing there are SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE with it! I'm definately not alone!

I haven't been diagnosed with OCD but my doctor said that it is very closely connected with depression which I am diagnosed with. I know there are certain behaviors that are associated with it that I exhibit.

For example...I compulsively scan radio stations when I am in the car, and I also HAVE to unload groceries in a certain order....

I am on effexor for the depression and some of those behaviors are getting better

Thank you for sharing that Shel. It answered a question I had. See I went to a psychiatrist and she said I'm not OCD, I'm bipolar. But I wondered why/how I had the compulsions and impulsions if I was bipolar and not OCD. I think you just answered my question.

Thanks again!

MTT I know what you mean about not wanting to take the drugs. I don't have that condition but I have others and I HATE taking drugs for this..I also want to learn to do things on my own..one thing i do have is ADD but, it does at times get the best of me.

The drugs scare me Sammy. I'm sure you know what I mean. But if it can be better than it is...? You know?

I am on meds...but I am not really having any trouble with them. The first week I felt pretty crappy, but i did notice a big difference after that.

just my 2 cents

MTT I have been on so many over the years..they knew i had ADD since I was seven and then another problem when i was older. I have been on and off so many I know they scare me too. Tho, without them I admit its so hard for me to do nearly as well as on them.I HATE taking them and i do have a tendency as most everyone knows here to go off of them from time to time and try to do well without them and i usually fail...but I keep trying..when im off of them I can be a royal mess! Well, I'm not as scared as I was. I had had a VERY bad reaction to Prozac about 7 years ago, and until just recently we had no idea why. Now that we know I'm bipolar, it turns out the reaction was because the Prozac made me WAYY too manic and I "overloaded". And thinking abck on it, that's EXACTLY what it felt like.

Now I'll be going on a 'mood stabilizer', which won't cause that same problem, so I'm less scares, but still scared.

Mommy, can you please let me know what drugs are mood stabilizers??? It seems that when I am feeling less depressed is when I become more self destructive, if that makes ant sense at all????

It makes total sense, Kitty. I have an eating disorder that gets significantly worse when I'm depressed--I lost 20 lbs during a two week depression recently because I didn't eat at all.

From what I know, they are lithium and depakote. I believe there is a third. Sherasi told me a lot about them, so maybe you can email her?

Thanks mommy, currently I am on Paxil and it doesn't seem to really help. Roll Eyes

I personally haven't met anyone for whom Paxil has worked. I'm not saying it doesn't, but it must not be for many.

isnt it great when you finally get a diagnosis as to whats wrong?
its such a feeling of relief to know that
1: you are NOT just crazy
2: you know why other treatments and drugs didnt work
and 3: you can finally start to find drugs and therapies that actually help.
