would you quit smoking today if you had a reusable device you could light, inhale a heavier-than-air fume and hold just like a cigarette, yet would not deliver any smoke externally or carcinogens/chemicals internally?
Mr(hack pack)Sensitive ****************************************************** 08-25-02, 10:11 AM Ewood27 I already have something close in the form of an inhalator. I can't light it and I don't know about 'heavier than air', but it does the rest by my inhaling through a (mainly) menthol cartridge in the dummy cigarette. It was part of my 'quit' scheme in January, and although I stopped the patches when they had done their stuff I still use the inhalator at times. I just enjoy having something rasping down my throat.
08-25-02, 11:05 AM babthrower Interesting. When I quit, I worked on the assumption that smoking is actually 2 additions: one to the nicotine, and another to the behavior set: lighting, fiddling, lip sensations, (eating substitute?), inhaling the pungent stuff, etc.
We know from watching old movies that the actions associated with smoking give social messages:
Hero takes a deep drag, which prevents him speaking for a moment, then holds it, frowning and glancing aside: "I'm thinking about what you just said."
Anti-hero taunts hero. Hero takes a casual drag: "I'm indifferent to your taunt."
Beautiful heroine takes a drag, fixes hero with a fascinated gaze. While she holds her breath, hero cannot but observe her flattering attention, not to mention her expanded chest profile.
Etc.
08-25-02, 12:38 PM displacedNYer I quit by not smoking any more cigarettes. That was it.
08-25-02, 02:15 PM stanbee No.
Also I understand that even menthol itself is a problem for the lungs.
About 25 years ago my doctor friend sent me for a chest x-ray. "You have the beginnnings of emphysema and better quit today!" He saw the lungs expanding within the ribcage to make up for being clogged by smoke byproducts
I remembered another friend's mom who had recently died of emphysema complications. Even with an oxygen tank she took 20 minutes to crawl up the five steps to her bedroom.
In an act of willpower and self-love I gave up my 3 pack a day addiction that day. The hardest thing I ever did. Really made me feel strong AND healthy.
To this day when I smell severe smokers, I can't imagine how anyone stood my offensive odor.
Love yourself enough to quit the self abuse. Don't replace it with another excessive habit.
08-25-02, 03:45 PM displacedNYer I have to addendum what I wrote above. I quit cold turkey because I am pregnant. I know many people who smoke while pregnant, and while it is their choice I consider it child abuse. So I did have more than the average amount of motivation.
08-26-02, 01:02 AM stanbee Beyond self-love. Glad to hear.

08-26-02, 09:17 AM Z281980 I don't know... How do I know what I'm enhaling isn't worse or just as bad as the cigarettes themselves ??
08-26-02, 11:30 AM displacedNYer Exactly. At least you know what's in a cigarette. Who knows whats really in those inhalers or patches?
I still think its worth it to go through the hell of quitting cold turkey, rather than rely on a crutch. I have to admit, I know three people who got addicted to the crutch.
09-26-02, 11:43 AM roogalator Although a big part of my smoking habit is something to do with my hands, I enjoy the bite of that hot smoke in my lungs, does this device deliver a bite?
11-10-02, 03:23 PM cattywampus Probably not, unless it's on fire.
Why don't you smokers all buy inhalers and set fire to them? That way you'll get all the carcinogens in plastic. Just as fatal, only quicker.
Catty (Puff, puff, puff, till you blow yourself away, la la!) big grin
