What is the most common phobia ? ********************************************** 08-03-02, 11:26 PM Katanya2000 Closterphobia followed by achrophobia, arachnophobia, and agoraphobia.
08-26-03, 06:42 AM elbereth Oh, I was really hoping this would be a thread about treating or getting to grips with phobias. I'd say arachnophobia was one of the most common
08-26-03, 06:59 AM Sherasi Welcome! If you have any questions, you are very welcome, also, to post a new thread!
09-02-03, 04:09 PM MommyTimesTwo I am so severely arachnophobic that I have panic attacks when confronted by spiders. Just typing the word "spider" makes me uncomfortable.
I'm afraid of all bugs (except flies, mosquitoes, noseeums, and picnic ants)...is there a name for that phobia?
09-02-03, 08:43 PM Tree It's definately SNAKES for me!!!!
When one of my cats brings a snake into the house, I CANNOT deal with it! I have to get someone to come over to handle it for me! (As I panic all over the place!)
Once while gardening, I was startled by a snake..... I dropped my rake, and never returned to that particular spot for 2 years!
Eek
11-01-03, 10:12 AM shelster Hmmmm....
what do you call a severe fear of not being accepted or liked?
11-06-03, 12:53 PM Elexina Let's see... enissophobia id the fear of criticism, rhabdophobia is the fear of being criticized severely, athazagroaphobia is the fear of being ignored, eremiphobia is the fear or loneliness or being by oneself...
My personal favorite is hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: the fear of long words.
11-07-03, 06:18 AM clarebear Spiders are our friends. I live by the water. If it wasn't for the spiders we would have tons of mosquitoes.
Some other common fears:
Coulrophobia- Fear of clowns
Gamophobia- Fear of marriage.
Odontophobia- Fear of teeth or dental surgery.
Fear of Public Speaking
I'm not afraid of heights... I'm just afraid of falling! Wink
11-07-03, 04:13 PM mattlynda i wonder if arachnophobia is a true fear of spiders, or just a dislike. my brother is severly arachnophobic; i seriously think he would have either a panic attack or a heart attack if one landed on him. he cant even kill them. i know a LOT of people who claim to be arachnophobic, but can kill them. to me, thats NOT arachnophobic, just a dislike.
as for me, now that ive conquored my fear or tornadoes, im not afraid of anything. Smile
11-09-03, 12:47 PM megan_09 Is having a fear of drowning a phobia?? Because I have always had this huge of drowning...I dunno why...But does that count as a phobia??
Smile Smile
11-09-03, 01:49 PM Sherasi If the fear of drowing makes you refuse to go anywhere near it.. on a boat, over a bridge, etc.. then it would be a phobia.. if this fear makes you avoid doing things you want to do, then it is.
11-10-03, 04:13 PM Elexina Any fear that affects your ability to do "normal everyday things" could be considered a phobia. If you fear drowning so much that you cannot even shower, I would certainly call that a phobia.
11-13-03, 09:42 PM dogspit Bees scare me way too much, as do shots and the thought of drowning. To say nothing of all my social phobias !

I would advise not to look to closely at common phobias. Most people are phobic of something, but it really is embarrassing to be so irrational.
What is that tiny spider really going to do to me? Is there really a problem with an elevator that works and you are on it for less than a minute? Are you really a nut case for not liking a dentist drilling your teeth?
Don't look too closely. You will be self-diagnosing yourself into a psychotic. No one is so flawless, but we just don't admit it...
