Went ahead and picked it up today since I happened to be at WalMart. It's a Veo Stingray web-cam.
When we installed it, my computer froze and all we could get was the wallpaper - no toolbar, no icons, nothing!
Re-booting didn't help - we would get the Windows ME startup screen, it would go to the wallpaper and no further.
A friend of my daughter is a computer whiz so he came over - couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. He called the manufacturer and they tried to help - since we couldn't even get INTO Windows to uninstall it, all they could suggest was to call Gateway, since they could tell him how to open Windows with no start-up screen.
Eventually, everything worked out (whew!), and the web-cam and everything else is working fine. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the room while he was talking with Gateway, so I don't know what the problem turned out to be - I'm just happy it's fixed, otherwise I wouldn't be here tonite!
Giz, I too have been thinking about a webcam... but I am afraid of getting one.. don't want to feel obligated to get made-up and dressed if I am messing around after a shower or whatever.
