Chocolate for fondue and dipping

1 stick (1/4 #) butter
4 squares unsweetened chocolate

1 cup sugar
pinch of salt

1 cup half and half, room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla

Melt butter and chocolate in heavy saucepan over low heat. Add sugar and salt. Mix well and continue heating.

Add half and half and vanilla. Whisk over low heat until thick, about 15 - 20 minutes. Do NOT boil.

I hadn't had chocolate (or any other kind of) fondue since the 70's, until this Christmas season. One of my friends made a chocolate fondue and had several choices of things to dip in it. Most agreed that the banana chunks were the best! Thanks for this recipe, I am going to try it!
