Miles Davis - If you’ve a good dictionary, look under “cool” for a picture of Miles.

In 1949 and 1950, Miles cut a dozen sides that became The Birth of Cool. This was both a title and an description.

By the way, if you ever hear Wynton Marsalis put Davis down, there is a story behind it. Marsalis publicly slammed Davis’ abilities (?) and then suddenly, showed up on stage at a Davis concert. The story I heard is that Davis told Marsalis that he had a choice of two ways to get off the stage, and only one of them involved walking. Miles used to box as a young man. Marsalis wisely left. (Wynton was in his early 20s at the time, and must have felt that Miles, at about 60, was still a bit too much to mess with.) Let‘s see which of the two is remembered 50 years from now.

Miles Davis was on TV here last night. It was his Isle of Wight 1969 performance with an oh so vibrant and healthy looking Keith Jarrett, inter alia, doing wonderful things on keyboards and piano. I am in genuine awe of the man's ability.

I should like to think, BOTH of them. I have heard Marsalis play classical & jazz, and he is absolutely stunning. Technically he is the best trumpet player I have ever heard.

One little point: I cannot understand someone of Miles' stature and abilities being reduced to threatening physical thuggery as a reaction to criticism of his professional capabilities.

Obviously it is taken as read that I never reached the lofty heights in my playing career attained by these two outstanding performers. Nevertheless, when musically criticised on occasion (yes it happened once or twice!) I simply thought, can I learn from this? Is there an area in my musical equipment which needs improving? If not, well, OK, each is entitled to his or her own opinion. I see no point in beating up the ones who perceive flaws in my armoury.

I also have an uneasy feeling about the details of this story (which I know you recount in all good faith, DG).

Would someone of Marsalis' reputation go on record as seriously criticising Miles' ability, and then appear on stage with him? Possible, yes, young men can be arrogant and brash and shoot their mouths off. Yet to then walk onto a public stage and confront the object of their criticism...?... Confused

Many excellent musicians who worked with me professionally over 16 years thought I was wonderful at the time, several more thought I was average, or at best, musically limited. That's life. I never win them all. Nowadays most of my pupils seem to think that I am a very good teacher. However, over the past 20 years several who started with me and made little progress have gone to other teachers and done very much better.

We can only do our best, but the idea of going and smacking a teacher who achieves more than me, or a pupil who says that his new teacher is far better than I am is simply laughable.

The world is big enough for these two giants, plus a thousand more. Let us celebrate each others' skills and attainments, rather than search out and decry the limitations... Wink

Of course, you are right, Ritz, and I certainly have no personal knowledge of the incident. However, from what I have read, Miles could be testy at times (I've heard a clip of Buddy Rich angry. Not pretty.), and, while his family was certainly not a poor one, he grew up in a very tough city. That, coupled with the possible brashness of a young man, could easily explain the incident. Or possibly Wynton was coming on stage to make a public apology and Miles was having none of it.

Fair points, DG.
Incidentally, I heard Marsalis play the Haydn Trumpet Concerto on CD a couple of years ago, before I learned that he is primarily a jazz musician. His grasp of the style is perfect, his tone as sweet as anyone's whom I have heard. Highly recommended!!!

PS I would certainly have crossed the road with some degree of alacrity to avoid Buddy Rich angry...
