My daughter's jazz band is looking for a couple of cool but easy songs for 6th-7th-8th graders. My daughter plays the saxophone, so naturally I am thinking about songs that the sax is featured on. Here are my thoughts so far:

Average White Band-Pick Up the Pieces
DJ Kool-Let Me Clear My Throat
Soul Man

Does anyone have any idea where to get easy arrangements for these? Last year, four sax players did the theme from the Muppets, and it was outstanding. I am also thinking that the band teacher would pull out a couple of the players and do a separate song. She has a couple of friends, one who plays good trumpet, and another that plays the keyboard. Any ideas?

The simplest tune I could think of is a Duke Ellington tune call "C Jam Blues",another name for it is "Duke's Place".

It's a 12 bar blues and the melody has only 2 notes it.It should be easy to have the whole band plays melody ,even if they all play it in unison.

It would also be easy for those who can improvise.

Another possibility is a tune Bill Clinton[ex President ] used to play on his tenor sax.It's called "My Momma Don't Dance and My Poppa Don't Rock and Roll".The melody also is quite simple to learn and play.

Just to clarify for your search, it's actually called "Your Mama Don't Dance," original version by Loggins & Messina. I haven't found any good arrangements for the sax though.

How about this for an idea.

Why not have several of your more ambitious students write an original blues???

Since most blues is a 12 bar pattern,with the second 4 bars a repeat of the first 4 bars,followed by the last 4 bars being different than the first 8 bars, you could teach them how to write as well as understand the form of the blues,{A A B }or question,question ,answer.

Since many blues also use riffs[ [a pattern that is repeated],they would also learn how to create their own riffs.This would also help them to improvise.

The blues tunes could then be played in unison style,all horns play the same melody.No need to harmonize all of the horn parts.

You may get them more involved than if you stuck a stock arrangement in front of them.

Just to let you know-Victoria's band is having a concert tonight and they are doing C Jam Blues, and she has a solo part! I am so proud and excited, I could just burst. She was playing it last night and she sounds terrific. Good thing she is filled with a lot of hot air.
