I've just bought another CD by Cleo Laine. I haven'played it yet, but (based on your own experience) do you think I'll like it?

If Cleo Laine sang the phone book, my phone bill would go up.

Some clips of Cleo

James Galway & Cleo Lane performing with the Boston Pops Orchestra

Cleo Laine - Not While I'm Around (I'm not a big Sondheim fan, but her voice is still something to listen to.)

Send in the Clowns (A much better Sondheim)

I Got it Bad and that ain't Good

One of my all-time faves. Great trad jazz. Spectacular voice. Used to see her whenever she came to the Orpheum or the Queen Elizabeth theater in Vancouver, with my husband who loved her too. Great stage presence. Her husband, John Dankworth, produced all her albums. He played clarinet and saxophone, and conducted the band on stage. He also composed quite a bit of music.

Cleo is very cute to watch on stage, very charming. I think I have all her albums.

I shall be in London at the end of August and have been checking out the listings for the BBC Proms (promenade concerts) at the Royal Albert Hall. I see from:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2007/whatson/0808.shtml
that Cleo Laine and John Dankworth are scheduled to appear there on 8 August. That's about three weeks too late for me! If they return next year they'll be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, incidentally. Who said there's no longevity in show-biz marriages?!

Sadly, Johnny Dankworth died in hospital this weekend after being ill for some time.

A loss indeed to jazz in the UK and beyond.
