He was renamed James Marshall Hendrix, in deference to his father, AFTER his birth.

I always found this interesting because he is is no small way responsible for the success of Marshall (no relation) amplifiers.

"Jimi" as a nickname spelling, by the way, didn't happen 'til the '60s, a marketing tool to make him look a little unique (and, of course, he was).
