Fashion designer Gianni Versace was shot dead on July 15 1997 in Miami FL. Versace was responsible for much of Elton John's image in the 1990's, from stage clothes to The One album cover and tour set design. Source

Yes, that's the event: well researched - though my two sources say they sang Psalm 23...
