In the 1961 hit "Goodbye Cruel World" by James Darren, there is a sound that is similar to, but is not, a calliope. What was actually used to make that sound?

I have looked at about 50 references to thiss and 48 of them use the exact phrase, "Calliope sounds were vocals by writer Shayne!" Only 2 identified the writer as Gloria Shayne. It's been my experience in Trivia that coincidences like this usually mean that no one bothered to research the facts, and simply accepted what was said (or written) by others. I have no doubt that Tie is correct in her memory, that Clark actually said that. What I do doubt is that Clark actually knew the truth, or, as was done so often back then, "non-facts" were introduced into circumstances in order to make them more interesting.
