A city on the French Riviera, and a larger city in the US both have identical statues of an Amercian Jazz musician, a giant of Jazz. What are the cities, and who is the artist?

OK, which OTHER Jazz giant is represented in a US city, and a city on the French Riviera? Again, what cities?

(I didn't know about Armstrong's statue, but the statues I seek are just as or even more appropriate.)

OK, then, a hint. Mozart got one of the cities right.

The answer is Sidney Bechet. However, the statue is actually a bust.

Congo Square, on the edge of the French Quarter, with Sidney Bechet's statue in foreground.

Depuis sa mort, en 1959, une statue de son buste se dresse dans un parc d'Antibes. - Wikipedia

I can't find an image of the Antibes bust.

Just a suggestion, I beleive FredPuli lives part-time in Antibes. He could maybe send a picture to you or post it here, DG. The Park is located at Antibes- Juan-Les-Pins.

No need. The bust in 'Congo Square' is a replica of the one in Juan-les-Pins ! Not surprising that there is a bust of him in Juan. The Jazz Festival at Juan is world famous. The Square Sidney [in French 'skwar sid-nay ' Big Grin] Bechet is where the Palais des Congres is, not that that civic hall, used for exhibitions , dog shows and the like, has any particular connection with jazz or Bechet. It was probably the nearest place to the Pinede, the small park where the jazz is, that they could find to rename. Smile

I thought that the New Orleans bust might be a copy of the Antibes one. Bechet was more recognized in France than the US, even though he was very very instrumental in forging the new music form, Jazz.

Some day, Fred, when I finally get to the festival, we should get together.

Next is 11th -22nd July 2007 ! There's jazz in Juan away from the Pinede itself too. The Pinede has the beachside open air 'theatre', consisting of a temporary stage and seats with a 'wall' around the arena consisting of canvas. Strangely this is fairly effective at keeping the sound in. But other performances go on off the Pinede at odd times of day and night or any old time and in odd places Smile. (What can you say of a Festival which cannot agree on what date it starts and ends next year? Could be the 12th or the 11th ending 21st or 22nd: take your pick between sources ! Sounds like it's run by jazzmen Big Grin )

I, too, might be able to show up Cool -- in 2008, that is. Is it about the same time every year?

The Ken Burns / PBS Jazz series gives Bechet his rightful due, but still makes the case that Armstrong was the single most influential "inventor" of jazz.

Yes. It is always in July, starting around the same date.
