Among early music enthusiasts, what well known English soprano had no expectations of becoming a professional singer? She was a classics student at Oxford and then a schoolteacher. She sang for pleasure in choirs and small groups, always feeling at home most in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. She has made well over a hundred recordings of all kinds, and her name is always and above all associated with pure sound.

Ha!

Just seen this; Paul, you're posting everywhere!

Viv saved my life; I'm not so hot on singers, but checked Viv's answer, and, as you say, it tallies. My favourite female opera singer is Amelita Galli-Curci; give her a whirl if you get the chance... wink
