Which song by Hoagy Carmichael had lyrics derived from a poem written by an amateur poet and which he'd been given, unsigned, by a student years earlier? The story goes that the poet's identity was not discovered until she was found by a film company prior to it being in a film. She died shortly before the film was premiered.

I would say the song you refer to is "I Get Along Without You Very Well"

It is indeed. The poet was a Mrs Thompson. For a long while Hoagy Carmichael was shown as sole author but when her identity was established she was given a full writing credit.
