I need help! I want to eat better. I know eating fruits and veggies and low fat foods are good, but I'm pretty uneducated on what to look for in foods and such. What types of cereals are REALLY good for you, like really health-nut type cereals. My aunt and mom went on a diet a few years back and I dont' remember too much about it, but I liked everythign they were eating. My aunt was a real health nut for a while, she would eat tofu, soy milk, and I distinctly remember certain cereals, that's why I asked. What should I look for in foods? Are sugar free snacks much better? How many carbs and grams of sugar shoudl I have a day? I always have to have my sweet-fix everyday, are there any healthy alternatives to satisfying that craving? Help educate me!

S&S, cereals should be either LOW in sugar, even better sugar free, also high in fiber, it helps fill you up and gets "things" moving! Do you like Shredded Wheat, or Grape-Nuts? Both are sugar free, salt free and are high in fiber, they also taste good even with out adding any sweetner, you could add some berries or a drizzle of honey. All-Bran is a good cereal, I am not fond of the taste, but a lot of people like it. There is also a group of cereals by Kashi that offer low cal, low fat, etc... just read your boxes, some cereals just because they are not "frosted" you think are low in sugar when they have nearly as much as the frosted ones do, plus people tend to add sugar to those anyway. As far as satisfying sweet tooth, eat fruit, raisins and remember the best way to stick to eating right is that there is NO food youy can't have, if you crave chocolate, eat three hershey kisses instead of a whole candy bar or in my case a whole 1 pound bag of M&Ms, buy the little bite size candies, the lunch size chips when you need junk. Beef Jerkey is a good spicey treat, it is fairly low in calories, very low in fat and is high in protien (not the sausage sticks)
Use common sense and good judgement on portion size and you'll do fine.

Sher, that's a great site!

Thanks for all the advice! I'm goin to the store tomorrow for groceries, I'm TIRED of eating junk! I'm usually good about always eating fruits and veggies, but I'm just BAD about giving in to cravings. It's hard too b/c I play softball and we're constantly on the road so we're always eating at fast food places and of course I can't just go in and get a salad and have everyone around me filling up on their hamburgers and french fries, how fair is that? *LOL* I don't have MUCH to worry about now since I am so active with sports, but I may not go on to play next year and I want to form good habits. Also, I just had this GREAT salad the other night that I've never even THOUGHT of making. Just thought I'd share the ingredients...It's got salad (of course!), fetta cheese, diced strawberries (or sliced, your preference) and this strawberry dressing that I think has balsalmic (spelled right??) vinegar in it as well, SOO goood..It's an actual dressing, you'll see it w/all the other salad dressings at the store. And don't forget crutons! And cucumbers are good in there too! Once again, SOO good, I HIGHLY recommend picking up the ingredients next trip to the store! Wink
