David, I Searched for seated cardio workouts.. to prevent the need for using your knees at all.
I found quite a bit of information .. many geared to cardio wheelchair bound exercise, which would be ideal for your needs, but you have to buy videos.. and I am not sure if you can afford to buy them.
As for just losing weight, I lost 160 pounds without exercising by simply altering how I ate (but did not go on a strict diet, I just reduced my caloric intake).
