I first hurt my lower back in 1982. In 2000 an MRI showed diffuse lumbar spondylosis and left lateral recessed stenosis. There is some diffuse disc bulging, mild spinal stenosis and a central disc protrusion. A few years ago I tried an upright exercise bike, after many years of not using one. The next morning I could hardly move.

Now I'm going to a physical therapist for my back, making some good progress with strengthing muscles. Last week he wanted me to ride the recumbent bike but I was afraid to try.

Do any of you have experience combining a bad lower back with a recumbent bike?

I find that the recumbant bike, for me, supports my back better then a traditional bike and allows me to have a smoother movement also.

Um, why aren't you taking the word of your physical therapist?

It seems like anyone here answering the question is only talking about how the bike feels to their back and don't know your particular problem nor are they trained as physical therapists like the one you are seeing.

Just wondering why you wouldn't trust your therapist?

the recumbent bike is better for your back (but harder on your wallet). be sure not to strain your neck too much looking forward.

try swimming. it's good excercise and alot easier on your muscles.
