Assumption # 1: You feel that you are not getting enough exercise when walking.

Walking burns calories; any movement will burn calories. Walking is the sort of thing that many people do not feel is a chore or is exercise, trust me it is.

Assumption #2: Your going to a Health Spa/gym/Fitness Center:

This fat burning zone is meaningless to me. I can burn fat by taking a hour long walk each evening, walking slowly around the block - if it is more exercise that what I have been doing and if I am not eating more, I will burn fat.

I would assume that that health spa has alternatives to the treadmill ones that you may want to consider.

Such as a rowing machine, Stationary bike even hitting the weights for some high rep low weight sets would be beneficial and will result in weight loss.

Before we do go any further you have to get a Body Fat Percentage Test before you can safely assume that you need to rid yourself of ten pounds.

I would suggest talking to your physician; he/she will be able to determine if you are genetically wired to have a lower body fat percentage than you do presently.

There are a lot of things I don’t know about you therefore I am unable to determine what kind of an exercise program is best suited for your purposes.

If it is an issue of fat, you may want to consider small alterations of your diet, such as switching from whole milk to 2% or non-fat, or cutting the amount of sugar you cook and add to foods to half. These kinds of things will reduce the number of calories, but not the quantity of food you eat.

One teaspoon of sugar can contain 60 calories. A Tablespoon of cooking oil, shortening, lard or other fats contain 120 calories. Therefore you can pretty much bet that you can pare off a lot of calories if you do things like use less margarine, or cook with a cooking spray instead of using cooking oil.

Jogging is not a good thing, really. It is a high impact form of exercise that can lead to shin splints, damaged joints, micro fractures and other various ailments that will bother you for the rest of your life.

If all you want to do is lose ten pounds over the course of a summer, then by all means reduce the amount of added fat and added sugar in your diet. Get more exercise in the form of walking to the store doors after parking further away, or putting on dance music or music that gets you moving when you clean house (This little trick not only gets you moving, dancing with the broom, doing the twist when you dust, but it also makes the chore fun).

Alternatives you may want to consider are: Rowing, biking, hiking (a good two hour nature hike every weekend will have a direct impact on your over all condition) Swimming: this is a full body work out which burns a lot more calories than jogging plus it works both upper and lower body, Weight training.

A little on weight training:

There is a myth out there that lifting weights mean bigger muscles (size and bulk) However recent studies have shown that light weight, high reps and 4-6 sets of even the basic exercises done once a week will improve muscle tone and will result in more calorie burn.

Muscle is the second energy consumer (calorie burning) in the human body; the brain is the first. This means that by increasing the over all body muscle mass with out having to put on inches, you will burn more calories.

Consider all of these options.

Cheers

David
