I really want to diet but everytime i try it lasts a few days and I fail. I am 17 years old, 5 feet 5 inches and about 138 pounds. I know I am not incredibly overweight and that alot of people would like to be my size, but I know I'd feel much better about myself if I lost about 10-20 lbs. I have a realy hard time staying motivated, b/c in the middle of my diet i just feel hopeless and then i give up. I am a vegetarian so I don't intake a lot of fat to begin with. I do situps everynight and I drink alot of water. Any suggestions on what I can do that dosen't involve alot of exercise. I am open for any suggestions. Also cellulite runs in my family and I need to get rid of that too. Help!!! confused

Exercise is the only way I know of to safely keep that cellulite away. You might want to try getting involved in some fun sports if solo exercising isn't your thing, i.e. racquetball, swimming, tennis, volleyball. Exercising doesn't have to be a chore, it can be fun. You can also try a trial membership in a gym to see it the equipment and classes available there would interest you or give even Yoga a try. But if at all possible stay away from dieting if you are not in need of it as dieting slows down your metabolism especially those fad diets.

Oh one more suggestion, look into participating in events like "Walk for a Cure" and other walks for special needs if available in your area. This not only helps your body but your mind, spirit and community (P.S. You can include participating in these events on your college applications.)...Smile.

I want to tell you something, but I need you to seriously think about it...

First of all I know how it is to have a low self esteem and the first think I think of when I think about "happiness" is loosing weight. But I realize that no matter how much weight I loose, I still wont be happy. The reason I am not happy is because I am not true to myself. Now I am not saying you arent true to yourself, but I am saying that loosing weight wont necessarily make you feel better.

Dont try and loose weight because you think a certain number sounds good. Your body has a certian weight that it likes (though it may not be at that certain weight) so dont worry about loosing weight focus on being healthy.

You dont need to be a weight just because the number sounds good to you. You want your body to be happy with itself and find its own weight. stop using the scale, and start focusing on your body. Do you FEEL like your at a healthy weight? and if not, start changing it, NOT depending on a number, but on your sense. You know when you're feel comfortable with your body or not. So stop using that scale and start doing things for your body and watch your body lose the weight it wants to. If u do the things that make you feel most like yourself, you'll start to feel better.

Start doing things that make you happy.. that make you smile. Treating yourself this way will make your body thank you by giving u rewards such as a leaner body, healthier immune system, a stronger heart, and good skin. When You arent treating your soul right, and You arent helping your body, it tells you its pissed off by becoming heavier having limper hair, losing the sparkle in your eye. Your body isnt just about the physical attributes. Your body isnt just about its weight. You need to realize that.

So your a vegetarian, what's to say you are not eating an extensive amount of vegetable fats?

Fat is fat, period.

What constitutes fats? Oils, animal fats (Lard, butter, all dairy products) Soys beans, all nuts and seeds are high in fat, eggs. Advocatos, high in fats.

If you are cooking with oil, you are adding fat to your diet. If you are using salad dressing, I am willing to bet you are adding fat to your diet.

Eat bread? Added fat.

Now, let us look at the added sugars.

Eat any canned vegetables? Look at a label of corn, sugar added for flavor. Any baked goods you purchase have sugars added and oils/fats too.

Cold Cereals - added fat and sugar - even the non-frosted variety like Rice Crispies, Grape nuts, all have sugar and fat added to them.

I bet if we really looked at your diet you would blush from all the hidden fats and sugars that are in your diet.

Hey, it isn't your fault, it is the food processors who want to get more money out of less food, so they add fat and sugars which means they are adding calories so they can convince us all that 5 chips are really a serving, or that one can serve a party of 6 from one can of corn.

I hate to break it to you, but unless you are growing and canning your own food, you are getting added fats and sugars.

Do you do dairy products (Milk, butter, eggs, cheese)? Unless the packaging says it is fat-free or low-fat, you are getting alot of fat added to your diet - empty calories.

Nuts, Peanuts, Seeds, chocked full of fat naturally - this is where our oils come from mainly.

Now then you confess that your family is prone to cellulite - Child if mama is fat, daddy is fat, they are going to have fat children. Not their fault, just the luck of the gene pool.

Yes, there are many who are predestined to have a layer of fat. You may be one.

Before entering into the idea of taking on a diet (A vegetarian is on a diet, a very restricted diet compared to meat eaters) I stongly urge you to see your doctor first, have him/her determine if you need to lose weight, or if you need to change your diet.

There are no easy exercise programs. Exercise is work which burns calories and builds up the muscle mass, it's going to make you sweat. Sorry, there are no magic pills, no work free exercise plans, no miracle plans out there.

What you need to do is have that self perspective checked out. You may very well be suffering from a form of depression/anxiety which could be adding a lot of unneeded burden on you.

See a doctor, spill your heart out to him/her - tell them what you tell us.

I am certain the solution you seek is not a diet.

Cheers

David <><

I did reply to the post on vegetarians. You said you do not eat a lot of vegetables and you eat a lot of rice and pasta. J*bean... I am not going to slam you for being a vegetarian. Maybe you should just cut out the starches and sugars. I said in my vegan post that my friend gained a lot of weight by eating processed foods, breads, pastas and cakes etc.. She has grip on her weight now. What did she do? She cut out all the sugar and starches. There is an old saying.. you are what you eat. Good Luck smile
