Does bottled water have an expiration date because the seal loses integrity and the water becomes contaminated, because the plastic leaches into the water, or because something else happens?
Would think that it would depend on the type of water in the bottle; Distilled, Spring, Mineral, Carbonated, Non-Carbonated, Oxygen Enriched, etc.etc. Different types = different reasons.

Regular bottled water (Filtered, spring, or purified water) will not go bad - but, it can become contaminated before bottling with spores which will lead to growth of algae and other nasties if the water is left in the light.
Other waters (with additives like carbination) will lose those additives in time.
Mostly the issue is to sell more water.
