Obesity is increasing because people are ingesting more calories and burning off fewer calories.
They're ingesting more by eating more food, and by eating more calorie-laden (sugar and fatty) foods. You get nearly your total daily recommended intake (or more) of calories, fat, and sodium from a Big Mac or Burger King Whopper, large fries, and large soda. If that's lunch, then add on breakfast (an Egg McMuffin, and/or a danish, cup of orange juice), an afternoon snack (candy bar), and dinner (pizza and beer or soda, and pie or cake for dessrt). That's a prescription for obesity and heart disease.
And we're training our kids to eat like that. Have you taken a look at what they're serving in elementary school? Pizza...chicken nuggets...hot dogs...french fries...and on and on. Most middle and high schools have junk food vending machines. (I could go on and on....)
And we don't burn off those calories. We exercise less, we engage in fewer sports and vigorous activities. Instead, we look for "quick fixes" -- the sham "ab belts" and liquid drinks that supposedly burn off the fat.
