I run about 1 1/2 to 2 miles a day, but the only part of my legs that are toning up are my calves and the front of my thighs. Is there any sort of excercise I can do without special machines or weights to tone up the back of my thighs and my butt? I'd really rather not have to go to the gym and I don't have access to a fitness specialist.

You might want to try this, I think it works, but you have to stick to it for a couple of months. I tried it for about two days and as usual I got bored and gave it up. I do have what I call a huge rubber band that was given to me by a doctor to treat weak ankles. I use it now to exercise my legs, and if I keep up with it, I hope to see some results in a month or two.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling...
Lie flat on your tummy, and take turns raising your legs about three inches from the floor, holding that position for the count of 10, slowly lower your leg to the floor and then repeat this for each leg about 8 to 10 times.
You'll be able to fell your butt and the back of your thighs begin to respond almost right away.

Ballet dancers have the beautiful behinds from doing "turned out" pliés.

TURNOUT- Of most importance is "learning" the concept of
"turnout." I have learned that it is a thing of your mind,
telling your muscles literally what to do. It is a process
of imagining your thigh and hip muscles 'turning out'.
Place your hands on the front of your upper thighs
and push gently around to the outside thighs, and then
to the back, meanwhile concentrating and telling your
muscles to follow. It takes a lot of time, and
concentration so be patient with yourself.

If you cannot feel those muscles it is important
to concentrate in the manner above until your
muscles "get it" and they will!

achieving 'turn out" contracts the gluteals in pulling the hips and thighs. This is a barre exercise but can be done with a chair etc.

pli·é ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pl-)
n.
A ballet movement in which the knees are bent while the back is held straight.

see a book or video on ballet moves

Your bum will become...divine!

If you do this move properly you will feel very sore.
