Question:
I have a great room with the kitchen and dining room all togther as one big room. My question is how to paint it. The ceiling is cathedral,my kitchen and dining room is decorated in Campbell's(navy and burgandy) and the great room is decorated in giraffes and palm trees(navy and hunter green).I'm not sure of how to paint to tie the three rooms together and whether to paint the ceiling the same as the walls.

Choices:
how to paint

Without seeing the room or a plan it is kind of hard to give you a catch all answer.

The ceiling and walls would normally be different colors and typically you would use egg-shell on the walls and flat paint on the ceiling. I normally see decorators choose a flat white for ceilings.

I think that in a big room like the one you describe you should go with a neutral color like beige, tan or an off white to allow the furniture, fabrics and finishes to make each room separate. If you feel that you would like to add color, consider doing an accent wall.

Some designers are now painting the ceiling and walls the same color. I think that this is fine if you are using a light neutral color but I think you might feel overwhelmed if you use a strong color for the walls and ceilings.

More than anything, you should really get a small amount of a couple paints that you like and do some test patches on a wall.

My advice is to keep the paint color scheme simple... hope that helps. Smile
