First off, I will try to explain this the best I can.

We live in a house where the garage is on the bottom and the house on top of the garage.

In between the garage and the house, there is a 2x4,4x4 (not sure of the size) that goes all the way around.

When you stand on the porch, you can see the top edge of that wood. The other day we noticed that, that edge has wood shavings on two different spots.

Is this a definate sign of termites?

We already have the large ants, some with wings, some w/o. Those have been seen crawling into the holes that are in the sides of the house.

I was just curious of wood shavings were a sign of termites or if it could be something else?

Thanks Smile

You won't see any external signs of termites until they have already done their damage. They are subterranean insects and can't survive "outside". What you are probably seeing are signs of carpenter ants. Just as destructive as termites.

And bumble bees will also bore into wood. But the hole that they leave is quite large.

Thanks, Tee Smile

Carpernter Ants aren't anymore assuring than termites.

If you had either or, I imagine you have to use commercial products? In other words someone else has to come out and do it? Stuff you buy at a home and garden store probably woudn't cut it, huh?

Thanks again!

If you own and value this house, I would not try home remedies. Get certified professional help. Like was mentioned, carpenter ant are very destructive.

After you have under control, start figuring out how the got there. They like damp wood. You may have a leak somewhere.
