Our home started out as a single-wide mobile home. Over the years, rooms were added on, and a new roof to cover the whole thing was put on. There is a space of 4-6" between the old roof and the new - and yes, it makes a huge difference.
I think the space between the roofs is what makes the difference - creates a buffer of air, not allowing the heat to permeate the residence. The only problem we seem to have is that we sometimes get varmints running around up there. So, it you do something like this, be sure and box it in, with plenty of vents around the edges.
