I am looking for some sugestions and help.
The problem is a house I may be working on has asbestos shingles. Some of the shingles are missing in one area near the front of the house and I'm looking for suggestions on how to fill in the missing area to match the existing. I also would like to paint the shingles a different color, is there a special method for this? Has anyone done this? I was thinking of a water base acrylic primer then two coats of water base acrylic paint.
Your opinions will be helpful.
Thanks

Asbetos shingle painting by Bob Vila

As far as the patching goes... I would call a roofing contractor in your area and see if they have a cement based shingle that would match in size and shape.

It's a tough way to go. I think possibly applying a new layer of siding over the house might be the better solution and will add value to the property.

Another thing I found:

Q: I am looking at a home to buy. It has asbestos siding. What needs to be done?
A:

If the siding is in good condition -- not broken or crumbling -- it may be painted over or covered with other material.
It is more hazardous to remove it than to contain it.
If it is deteriorated -- broken and crumbling -- and it has to be removed, a certified asbestos contractor should be hired to do the job. The waste has to be handled according to requirements and disposed of in an approved hazardous waste landfill. Your state environmental agency can give you information on handling and disposal.
