The air gap on a dishwasher is installed to provide a protection against a siphon into the clean water.
What is likely the culprit is an obstruction inside the dishwasher space causing the jets to be blocked. First check inside the dishwasher and locate where the water comes in and drains and make sure there are no obstructions. I have seen something as small as a sticker off a banana or a piece of aluminum foil cause a blockage. Then if that doesn't help the situation or if you don't find anything, I suggest you pull the dishwasher and see if the hoses in the back are kinked or twisted. This should solve the problem... if not come back and tell more.
The worst case is a call to a service technician that could cost $70 for repair. It doesn't sound like you have any mechanical problems that would be costly.

Good find Kendor If the person who set this question has a similar layout I'd say open up the sludge trap under the sink and clear that out I always refit it with a small amount of bleach in the "cup" to clear the rest of the pipework Tip get a sharp stick and scrape the upper face of the trap you'd be surprised how much sticks up there (and its a mucky job) Wear gloves and position a bucket underneath to catch the falling waste Once done should last you 5 years or more before you do it again(normal usage)
