I currently in a basement remodel...and would like to move a steel post (at max) 8 inches....do any of you think this would be a problem??......also the post is currently 4 inches in dia.... the local Home Centers only seem to handle 3 inch post...would that be enough...my home is just a single story (with basement)

The column supports something - likely a steel beam that in turns supports the structure above. It is best to leave it as it is. If you go back to your local home center and speak to them about it, they can likely talk it through with you. If you are moving it a short distance along the beam that's one thing as long as the spans aren't maxed out, but you HAVE to shore while you are doing this work and to me, from your brief post, it seems you're not up to this and you could cause some damage to the structure of your home if you don't do this right.
