I just moved into a new Deer Valley mobile home - only 810 square feet. They are reputed to be among the best-insulated of all brands.

Here in south Louisiana, I have already needed my A/C several times this winter, and it seems to run a long time to cool the place a few degrees. It is a three ton unit, a little bigger than required. Utility costs are running higher than I anticipated, and I'm thinking it will be worse in the summer.

I've been told that a separate roof, erected over the structure, would be a tremendous saver of this cost, especially cooling. Any input will be appreciated here. Is this cost-effective, or not?

Our home started out as a single-wide mobile home. Over the years, rooms were added on, and a new roof to cover the whole thing was put on. There is a space of 4-6" between the old roof and the new - and yes, it makes a huge difference.

I think the space between the roofs is what makes the difference - creates a buffer of air, not allowing the heat to permeate the residence. The only problem we seem to have is that we sometimes get varmints running around up there. So, it you do something like this, be sure and box it in, with plenty of vents around the edges.
