Electricity is very dangerous stuff. From electric shook hazard to fire. Improper wiring and overloaded circuits is the number one cause of house fires.

Picking an electrician to do work around your house is a major undertaking. Try to get someone that is locally recommended. Next, be sure he is licensed and bonded to work in your city. Do take him just because he is the cheapest. He may be cutting corners to make a buck. Make sure you have in writing what work he is to do and how he will do it.

If this is more then just a small repair, be sure he takes out the proper building permits with the city and is inspected by the city inspector. Try to be there with the inspector.

Lastly, and this applies to all contractors working for you around your house, DO NOT MAKE THE FINAL PAYMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN INSPECTED AND YOU ARE SATISFIED EVERYTHING HAS BEEN COMPLETED TO YOUR SATISFACTION. That should include removal of all left over material, debris and supplies that you do not want to keep. If any of that is considered HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, it will cost you a fortune to have it removed.

The standard payment method I use is,
25% down
25% when the work has started
25% when the work is half completed
And the balance after completion and inspection.

Or
33% down
33% half way
And the balance after completion and inspection.

As far as the lighting store, they probably don’t do electrical work but may be a good source for a recommend electrician.
