Gas logs are for appearance only. They do very little in heating an area.
Wood burning helps a little, but only right in front of it.
I can give you the scientific reasons why if you wish.
What has helped some are wood burning stove inserts.
The only thing I can think of is a new, high efficient heating system and a tight, well insulated house.
Newer system can be "Zoned" for, let's say, upstairs and downstairs as seperate zones. And if you are talking about hot water heat, every room can be on it's on zone.
From your post, I am assuming, and we all know what that means, that you have either hot water or steam heat. A converted boiler is very inefficient. More heat is going up your chimney keeping the birds warm then to your house. That is where I would start.
Next, I have installed room thermostats on system like yours with good results. When the room reached the preset temperature, the valve would close. I would check with a reliable heating contractor in your area for his recommendation. A few words of caution here. Pick one that has come recommended. Has been in business a while. And lastly, specializes in "Hydronic Heating", heat with water. Check with a couple if you can. Pick their brains. Don't let on that you are talking to others. That will help you tell which ones are trying to pull something on you.
In any event, with the rising cost of fuel, any investment will save you in the long run. Even if your not planning on staying in the house, it will increase it's resale value.
I need to add a P.S. here. If you do go with gas or wood burning fireplace, have that chimney inspected for your safety.
