I have a neon light fixture that makes a fairly loud humming noise when on. What causes this and how is it best corrected? There does not seem to be a "starter" plug. I believe they are no longer used in such fixtures.
Thanks for any suggestions,
sirjorj

Now, don't hold me on the spelling, but you need to replace the "ballast" (the power supply in the fixture...)
Sometimes tho, its cheaper to replace the whole fixture...

I doubt that you have a neon light fixture unlees it is part of an advertising sign. I assume what you have is a fluorescent light fixture, in which case the humming is caused by cyclic vibrations in the ballast. I agree with Fritzz that it might well be almost as cheap, and less trouble' to replace the entire fixture.

But of course frankvan, you are correct. It is NOT[/B] neon but fluorescent! Red Face

The ballast pulls out or screws out (by hand) easily of most fittings
Be aware there are several different types
Take your old one to the electric store and get a match
TIP:If the tubes are also slow to light (or flicker a lot) this besides the Ballast failing (or on the verge of failure) might be due to the tube shifting slightly ?
Unlike an ordinary bulb you can rotate the tube holding the glass which is warm( and very fragile! Roll Eyes) with a tea towel while the light is on and it may come on fully? Warning: Do not come in contact with the end caps on the tube these are live and Hot
NOTE this tip is only good for those tube that are the Push in type
With the Pinned or Screw type try removing the Tube (Switch OFF first!) then reinstall it by reversing the Tube Wink
If no Joy then replace the Ballast
PS A "Dead" tube might be also due to Ballast failure If you have a known good spare ballast that'll fit then swap that over to eliminate this Wink

I am just jealous. I love neon lighting! I wonder when I can ever afford something that I want and like.

Be nice and tell me what your neon fixture is. I want one too. I can't fix this problem, but completely jealous of your complaint!! lol!
