I have a Kenmore elec. dryer which I bought used (w/ matching washer). Model # 110 698112990. I don't think it's very old because it has "chunky" knobs and an interior drum light.

The problem is it suddenly stops in mid-cycle (Timed Dry). When I push the "start" button, it immediately re-starts. Sometimes, it finishes, sometimes it stops again! I have tried--one time--to use the Auto-Dry II mode and it ran all the way through.

Could it be the timer? Something else? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! DAG

I was trying to help but your model number does not come up on the Sears on-line data base.

Please check it again to be sure.

Yes, Kenmore Mfr model numbers for dryers all seem to be 5 digits. What you provided almost looks like a Sears item number but all I've found start with 026. Please look again and see if you find any other numbers. Thanks.

While you are looking for a serial number...

This sounds like an unbalanced drum shut off. The drum (where you throw the cloths) is designed with a governor/regulator switch which not only regulates speed of turn, but also stops the machine if the drum wobbles too much (sometimes it is the same device that stops the machine if it over heats – depending on the maker).

Dryer drums can stop, either due to a loose belt (most likely its time for a belt replacement) or due to too big of a load, or due to the regulating device being finicky and "reading" the wobble wrong.

I would start with checking the belt - may only need a bit of tightening - or may have stretched out and need replacing (most belts have a part number on them for ease of replacement). They are very simple to replace, not requiring special tools.

Adding to Davids answer could also be the drum belt tensioner (if fitted) being stiff? Rotate the drum by hand and observe the belt tension if the tensioner is pushing or pulling the belt evenly...worth giving it a hard push or Pull to see if there is a strong return action when you let go(watch your fingers!)
