When you say air gap, do you mean around the door or at some other point.

The air gap on a dishwasher is installed to provide a protection against a siphon into the clean water.

What is likely the culprit is an obstruction inside the dishwasher space causing the jets to be blocked. First check inside the dishwasher and locate where the water comes in and drains and make sure there are no obstructions. I have seen something as small as a sticker off a banana or a piece of aluminum foil cause a blockage. Then if that doesn't help the situation or if you don't find anything, I suggest you pull the dishwasher and see if the hoses in the back are kinked or twisted. This should solve the problem... if not come back and tell more.

The worst case is a call to a service technician that could cost $70 for repair. It doesn't sound like you have any mechanical problems that would be costly.

Will there be an inline filter like a small basket or slot in screen fitted in the end of the pipe? or could be as simple as a narrow cone shape which allows water to drain and allows limited back pressure? ..If this is so you'll find a small piece of debris wedged across the hole will cause this prob
There is a 3rd type which has a plastic ball held against the inlet if there is any back pressure but a stray peeling which can wrap around the ball or the ball has become discolored over a long period, and "grown" a coat of slime and other yuck Frown thus not sealing the orifice and leaking (only way to clean this is to either remove the unit for dismantling or B)Or Leave in situ, poke the "ball" with a soft blunt stick (also clean the tube it fits into) and see how much muck comes off If the ball pops out (held in by a retainer of some sort?) that's good news
And do wear some gloves (Health hazard!) Wink
Thats my theories Wink

Just saw this post so sorry if I'm late. Actually, the clog is probably on the other side of the air gap, between it and the drain, (or garbage disposal). Take a look at this page.

Good find Kendor
If the person who set this question has a similar layout I'd say open up the sludge trap under the sink and clear that out I always refit it with a small amount of bleach in the "cup" to clear the rest of the pipework
Tip get a sharp stick and scrape the upper face of the trap you'd be surprised how much sticks up there Mad(and its a mucky job) Frown Wear gloves and position a bucket underneath to catch the falling waste
Once done should last you 5 years or more before you do it again(normal usage) Wink
